General Information for Outdoor School/Science Camp Please read all of this information carefully so you can check-in and out properly and quickly! 1. Please write your child a letter and MAIL IT EARLY before the camp starts. Your child will feel left out if everyone else gets mail, and you mail them nothing. Please give this address to their friends and relatives! Be sure to put on a return address in case it arrives after our camp ends.
(Camper's Name) Homeschool Science Camp
Camp Adams
18499 S Hwy 211
Molalla OR 97038
2. The telephone during camp is for emergency use only. Cecil / John Hungerford's cell phone will be on during camp. It will interupt class sessions at times. (503) 807-6226 There is a pay phone near the office if you want your child to call you collect or use a calling card. If your child is having so much fun that they forget to be lonesome and homesick, thus forgetting to call you, don't worry and fret not! Relax! Your children are in good hands! We will love them and do our best to keep them safe, happy, and content. 3. Turn in any medication to our nurse when you first check-in. Put all medicine (even Tylenol) in a ziploc bag, labeled neatly with your child's name. Enclose a permission slip, signed, with detailed, specific directions on dosage and schedule. NO CAMPER WILL BE ALLOWED TO KEEP MEDICINE IN THEIR CABIN. We don't want other children getting into their medications. Remember to send all needed medicine; we do not provide any medication for the students. Even common pain killers cannot be provided as medical laws are very strict. 4. CHECK-IN TIME: 1:30 PM on Monday . Please arrive at camp no later than 1:45 PM. If you are late, you will miss out on some very special activities! If you are early, go sightseeing or hiking nearby. We will be in a staff meeting, and will not begin checking students in until 1:30 sharp! Adult helpers and the children they bring: please arrive at 11:20 or no later than 11:30 AM. 5. At 1:30-1:40 PM the rest of you may arrive. Please PARK IN DESIGNATED AREAS ONLY! Look for the "Science Camp" signs. Enter the Auditorium, turn in your medicine, and then get your nametag and cabin assignment. 6. Next, walk to your cabin to unload gear quickly. Then it's a quick "good-bye!" Please realize that there is not enough parking for all of us, and you will need to move your car immediately. Thank you for cooperating and leaving camp by 1:55 PM! 7. Once all of the parents are gone, the children can start to get to know their counselor and the other kids in their cabin. Plus, the counselor will need to get their students to the first educational activity on time. Your cooperation will help our camp stay on schedule and run more smoothly. Thanks! 8. EAT YOUR LUNCH BEFORE ARRIVING AT CAMP. Your first meal will be at 5:30 p.m. 9. Please remember to bring a washed, plain, white T-SHIRT (one per camper) for a fun craft class. Watch for sales, or visit your local thrift store. It should be new looking! Remember to WRITE YOUR NAME ON THE TAG WITH PERMANENT INK! It is important that you remember to bring your shirt for crafts. The shirts will be painted, decorated and autographed. 10. WRITE YOUR NAME ON EVERYTHING! Every year many items are left behind and we cannot identify them. PLEASE: LABEL ALL OF YOUR CLOTHING CAREFULLY! 11. Please check the equipment list carefully so that your child will not have to borrow from others. This is extremely important. Packing properly can make the camp more successful. 12. Please remember raincoats or ponchos, and water shoes, or secure Velcro thongs. We’ll be learning outside even if it pours down rain, so raincoats are a definite must! Each camper will need a pair of water shoes, or rubber boots, or old tennis shoes, or secure thongs to wear during the stream ecology classes. Kids with proper footwear will get to touch and see a lot more. 13. TEACH YOUR CHILD HOW TO DRESS IN LAYERS. Early mornings and evenings will be cold, but days may be rather warm! Children must be urged to wear a tank top or T-shirt under their sweatshirts and flannel shirts each day, so they can take-off layers while hiking. 14. Three well-balanced, tasty meals will be served daily. If your child requires snacks, they may bring them in a separate plastic bag with their name on it. Do not bring spending money. There is no snack shack at this camp. You are welcome to bring (hopefully healthy) snacks to share with the other kids in your cabins. (I’ve always loved the wonderful camp food in past years, but some children might not.) 15. Notify the director if your child needs a special diet or has food allergies. We need to warn the cooks before they order the food for camp. 16. Tetanus boosters must be current- within the past 10 years, unless for strong religious convictions you sign the non tetanus shot part of the medical form. 17. CHECK-OUT TIME is 1:30 PM on Friday. First, GO TO YOUR CHILD'S CABIN and get all luggage. Remember to pick up medication, crafts, and check through the Lost and Found. Try to get all of their gear. Every year campers leave lots of stuff! If you need to pick up your child early, due to family plans, please let me know in advance to avoid class disruption. 18.CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY: If a registered child or adult cannot come to camp, we will refund most of the amount paid. Cancellations before May 20 will have a $25 deduction. Cancellations later than this will have a $50 deduction. If you need to cancel, you may choose to find a replacement camper for your child’s reserved spot. The Director reserves the right to not allow a transfer, if for some rare reason it will not work out. If your child needs to arrive at camp late or leave early, he/she will still need to pay the full amount due and will receive no discounts. Please notify the director of any schedule variations. 19. Please Note: this camp is only for 9 year old —12th graders who homeschooled during the last school year. Remember, this Outdoor School / Science Camp is geared for Christian homeschoolers, who believe in creation and the Bible. 20. BEDWETTING: If your child has a bedwetting problem, relax! Our staff has a very private, secretive way of washing the sleeping bag and returning it to the proper cabin while the kids are out hiking and learning for 3 or more hours. Surprisingly enough, numerous kids have this problem, according to the medical forms each year. But, wetting at camp is nearly non-existent! Counselors closely monitor a last visit to the toilet right before lights-out each night. Plus, no late evening sugary snacks are allowed. With healthy food, most kids sleep lighter. So, relax! We’ve had a high success rate of dry beds at camp in the past. Reassure your child that lots of kids have this problem, but it rarely happens at camp. But, please send "pull-ups" with your frequent wetters and assure them that no one will know they are wearing them! Our counselors do not enjoy washing sleeping bags unnecessarily, because a shy optimist left their pull-ups in their suitcase. So, please encourage your child to wear and not to hide their "pull-ups". Tell them that no one will know about the problem, because of confidentiality. 21. HOMESICKNESS is another concern for many parents. Here again, we have a high success rate! Camp is so busy and so fun, that most kids forget to be homesick. Plus, if we know your child struggles in this area, we give extra hugs and smiles to them each evening at bedtime and every morning right before breakfast. We like the challenge of seeing how many parents we can surprise, when they find out at the end of the week that their child was happy, content, well-adjusted and not homesick. Remind your child to ask God for his strength, peace, and joy. Please have your shy children practice the skill of meeting new friends. If they prepare some questions and discussion topic starters before camp, practicing with their parents, siblings, and a mirror, they will have more self-confidence! Have them plan on making the first move, to ask a lonely, shy kid in their cabin about their hobbies, interests, favorite vacations, and various emotions like their scariest, happiest, or most embarrassing experiences. They are bound to make new friends on the FIRST DAY if they try to "be Jesus" to others FIRST. 22. PLEASE PRAY for the campers and staff. May God bless us with a safe, fun, and terrific camp. Our hope is that each child and adult will draw much closer to God, while we learn about His creation and amazing power! |
